How to Add Music to a Picture Slide Show

By Christina Shaffer

Whether you want to create a slide show for your home computer, your social networking profile or a special family occasion, you can design a captivating slide show by adding a musical soundtrack. A handful of free graphics applications, such as Windows Live Movie Maker, Picasa 3 and Visual Slideshow, allows users to easily add music to a slide show project. If you do not have an existing photo slide show on your computer, choose one of the free applications, import your digital images and organize the photographs in your project before adding music. Depending on the application you choose, you will use songs that are in MP3, WAV or WMV formats.

Using Windows Live Movie Maker

Step 1

Go to "Start," click "All Programs" and open Windows Live Movie Maker.

Step 2

Click on the Movie Maker "File" tab, choose "Open Project" and open your existing slideshow. If you do not have an existing slide show, create a new slide show project by clicking on the "Add videos and photos" button and importing digital images from your computer.

Step 3

Click on the "Add music" toolbar button and select the "Add music" option. Locate the music file you want to use in your slide show and click "Open." You will notice a preview window on the left side of the screen.

Step 4

Click on the "Play" button to preview your photo slide show set to music.

Step 5

Save your new slide show when you're satisfied with your creation. To save your file, click on the Movie Maker "File" tab, select the "Save as" option, name your new file and click "Save."

Using Picasa 3

Step 1

Go to "Start," click "All Programs" and open Picasa 3. If you do not have Picasa installed on your computer, you can download Google's free graphics application from the company's site.

Step 2

Choose the photo album you would like to use as your slide show. If you want to upload additional images to Picasa, click on the "File" tab and select "Add Folder to Picasa."

Step 3

Right-click the photo album you want to use for your slide show and select "Edit Album Description." The "Album Properties" window will appear on the screen.

Step 4

Check the box next to "Use music for Slideshow and Movie presentation."

Step 5

Click on the "Browse" button and locate the music file you would like to use in your photo slide show. Click "OK" after selecting a song.

Step 6

Click on the green "Play Fullscreen Slideshow" button to preview your new photo slide show.

Using Visual Slideshow

Step 1

Download and install Visual Slideshow, which is a free application.

Step 2

Import photographs into the application by clicking on the "Images" tab and selecting the "Add Images" option. Locate the images on your computer and click "Open."

Step 3

Choose the placement for each image in your slide show. You can move images on the slide show project screen by clicking and dragging them to your preferred location.

Step 4

Click on the "Gallery" tab and select "Properties." The "Gallery properties" dialog box will appear on your screen. Click on the blue "General" button.

Step 5

Check the box next to "Play audio file," locate the song you would like to use in your slide show and click "Open." The song will be added to your slide show automatically. Unlike Windows Live Movie Maker and Picasa, Visual Slideshow does not have a preview option. To view your new photo slide show, you must save it to your hard drive.

Step 6

Click on the "Publish" toolbar button to save your new slide show.
