The iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch all include the ability to create a list that blocks the receipt of text messages or phone calls from phone numbers you specify. You must have iOS 7 or later for this feature.

To add a new number, open the Settings app and tap Phone. Tap Blocked and select Add New... for your full contact list to appear. Tap the contact you want to add to the block list. Alternatively, view the text message or iMessage conversation with the person you want to block. Tap the Info button on the top left and choose Block this Caller.

Certain Android phones natively offer call and text message blocking, but the most feature-complete solution is to download a third-party app to create a block list. Some free examples include Call Blacklist, Mr. Number and Block SMS And Call. For instance, adding a phone number to block in Call Blacklist is as easy as tapping the plus icon at the bottom right to input a contact. The app also includes various settings for blocking unknown or anonymous calls and even SMS text keywords.

Windows Phone

Call+SMS Filter is a free app in the Windows Phone Store that extends your phone's settings to include call and text message blocking. It's available exclusively on Nokia Lumia devices. Once installed, open your phone's Settings and choose Call+SMS Filter. Click Accept to the terms and conditions. Then turn on the switch for Blocked calls+SMS and tap Blocked Numbers to add a new phone number.

Carrier Blocking

Most of the major carriers in the U.S. have a call and message blocking feature available as part of a parental controls package.

AT&T Smart Limits service, available for $4.99 per month for one line or $9.99 per month for up to 10, provides an app with a block list. The first 30 days are free.

On Verizon Wireless, log in to your account on Verizon's website and click Manage Verizon Family Safeguards & Controls. Add numbers to block under the Call & Message Blocking section.

T-Mobile's Family Allowances service for $4.99 per month lets you block specific numbers from calling and texting you. The Primary Account Holder can add this service by clicking Tools on the My T-Mobile website when logged in.

On Sprint's website, click the My Preferences tab after logging in, then choose Block texts. Type in a specific number you want to block and click Add number. This section also allows for blocking the text messaging service on your phone altogether.
