How to Combine CBR Files

CBR files are RAR-compressed containers of comic book or Japanese manga pages that comic book readers display in book-style viewing mode. If two or more CBR files are part of a volume or the reader wishes to combine multiple volumes into a single anthologized book, CBR files can be combined by uncompressing and then repacking the images into a single file.

Unpack the CBR Files

Step

Right-click on the desktop, select “New” from the contextual menu and click on “Folder” to create a new empty folder.

Step

Type in a name for the new folder and press the “Enter” key.

Step

Download and install a compression utility that supports RAR format. Available programs include 7-Zip, WinArchiver and WinRAR Archiver.

Step

Double-click on the CBR file to bring up the “Open with” dialog.

Step

Select the compression utility from the “Open With” window. Leave the “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” option checked if you wish all future CBR files to be opened in the compression utility.

Step

Click “OK” to open the CBR file. The CBR file will open as a RAR archive in the utility and display a list of compressed image files.

Step

Drag and drop all the image files from the old CBR file to the new folder you created in the first two steps.

Step

Repeat Steps 3 to 7 for any other CBR files that you are combining.

Create the Combined CBR File

Step

Launch your compression utility and create a new RAR archive.

Step

Select the folder containing the combined image files and add it to the newly created RAR archive.

Step

Find the new RAR archive on the computer and rename the file extension to “CBR” without the quotation marks.

Step

If file extensions are not displayed on your computer, double-click on your “Computer” icon, click on “Tools,” click on “Folder Options” and select the “View” tab from the “Folder Options” window. Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types” from the “Advanced Settings” panel and click “OK” to close the window and apply the new settings.
