You can connect your iPad to an HDTV in just a few simple steps. Connecting an iPad to an HDTV will allow you to show movies or pictures on the TV. As an added benefit, starting with the iPad 2, you can use the HDTV as a mirror monitor, allowing the TV to show exactly what is on the iPad's screen.
Open "Settings" on the iPad by tapping the "Settings" app icon.

Tap "Video" from the menu on the left hand side of the iPad screen.
Turn the "Widescreen" switch option to "On" under the "TV Out" section.
Connect the Apple Digital AV Adapter to the 30-pin port on the iPad. This port is located directly under the "Home" button on the iPad.
Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the Apple Digital AV Adapter.
Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDTV's HDMI port.
Change the video input on the HDTV to the appropriate HDMI input. You will now be able to share content between the iPad and the TV.

Screen mirroring is only available with the iPad 2 or later models. Screen mirroring on the iPad will allow the HDTV to show the exact image shown on the iPad screen.
Original iPads can share media from select applications including "YouTube" and "Photos."
If no video is showing on the HDTV, press the "Home" button and disconnect the cables. Then reconnect the cables and try again. Make sure the TV is on the correct input.
