When you receive a call on your landline phone while watching your favorite program, you don't have to wonder whether you should take it. You can check the number without even looking at your phone. Your DirecTV receiver can tell you the number of the caller by displaying a popup on your TV screen. All you need is the telephone cable that came with your receiver, and a subscription to the caller ID service on your home phone account.
Plug the RJ11 cable provided with your DirecTV receiver into the "PHONE JACK" connection on the back of the unit.

Plug the other end of the cable into a phone jack.
Turn on the DirecTV receiver and your television.
Press the "MENU" button on the remote, and select "Caller ID & Msgs."
Choose "Edit Settings," and select "Caller ID."
Open the "Notification" tab, and verify the feature is set to "On."
If you don't have the caller ID service on your phone line, the numbers won't show up. Contact your local telephone company to add the service to your account.
If you use a PBX phone system, you cannot get caller ID. Connecting the cable to a PBX system can damage your receiver and void the warranty. If you're not sure what type of phone system you use, contact your telephone company.
