How to Connect a Wireless Security Camera to a Computer

By Bennett Gavrish

If you are looking for a way to secure your home or office, wireless security cameras can be a great option. With a wireless security camera, you can view the camera feed from remote locations using any computer with an Internet connection. Wireless security cameras do not need to be physically connected to a computer using a USB or other data cable.

Things You'll Need

  • PC running Windows XP or later
  • Wireless security camera

Step 1

Plug your wireless security camera's power adapter into an electrical outlet to turn the camera on. Wait for the camera to connect to the nearest wireless network and acquire an IP address, which will appear on its small display window in the "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" format. If your camera has a local area connection as well, you can connect an Ethernet cable with an active Internet signal to the network port on the back of your security camera.

Step 2

Log on to your PC. Insert the software CD that came with your wireless security camera. Install the software and then launch the camera administration program. Use the camera administration program to set a username and password for your wireless security camera.

Step 3

Open any standard web browser on your computer and enter the IP address of the camera into the address bar at the top of the window.

Step 4

Enter the username and password that you set up previously when prompted by the web application. After successfully logging in, the feed from your wireless security camera will appear on the screen.
