AT&T Wireless customers wanting to switch to Verizon Wireless now have two options. Customers not wanting to keep their existing wireless number can activate a new line of service with Verizon then contact AT&T to cancel their old service. Customers wanting to keep their wireless number can do so if the number is eligible for local number portability. According to the Verizon website, a number is generally eligible for transfer if it will be assigned to the same geographic area and if Verizon offers service in that area.
