You can activate a new SIM card for your phone and keep your old number.

A SIM card is a smart card inserted into your cellular phone that links it to your cellular account on your network. The network then allows your phone to make calls. A SIM card can store some personal information. There are a number of reasons why you might need a new SIM card for your AT&T service. You may have lost your phone, and may need to reactivate an older phone until you can buy a new one. Or you may be buying a new phone. You can retain your current phone number when the new SIM card is activated.
