Mobile Telephone Networks (MTN) offers mobile communication services in New Zealand for both pre-paid and post-paid customers. If you are a postpaid customer, when you sign up for service, the retailer will automatically activate your SIM card for you. If however, you purchase a pre-paid SIM card, you will need to contact MTN to activate it.

Step 1

Insert the SIM card into your phone. Accomplish this by taking the back cover off your phone, taking out your battery and locating the slot underneath the battery to insert the SIM card. Make sure you line up the gold contacts on the SIM card with the gold contacts in the slot.

Step 2

Dial 173 to reach the MTN call center, speak with a customer service representative and explain you would like to activate the new SIM card. If you are already a customer and want to keep your same phone number, inform the representative.

Step 3

Give the representative all the required information. If you want to keep the same phone number, the representative will solicit information regarding your identity. She will ask to verify the most recent calls you have made on your account, the last date you added funds to your account, your account identification number and your MTN phone number.

If you are activating a new account, or keeping the same phone number, you will also need to provide additional information. That information will include your name, address, alternate telephone number, email address, work address, when you purchased the SIM card and from which reseller you made your purchase.

Step 4

Disconnect the call once the representative activates your service in the system. You will need to turn off your phone and turn it back on again to pick up the signal.
