How to Transfer Contacts to Gmail

Keep your contacts safe and up to date by transferring them to your new Gmail account. Use Gmail's Import Mail and Contacts feature to transfer contacts directly from Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail and other webmail or POP3 email services. Use the manual CSV importation method if you've already exported your contacts to a CSV file from another email provider or application. See the Tips section for information on how to export a CSV file from Microsoft Outlook.

Import Contacts Directly From Another Account

Step 1

Log in to your Gmail account, click the "Gear" icon and select "Settings" to load your account's settings screen. The Gear icon is located in the top right corner of Gmail and resembles a mechanical gear or cog.

Step 2

Click the "Accounts and Import" tab at the top of the settings screen to load the Accounts and Import page. This is the page through which you load contacts from other email accounts.

Step 3

Click the "Import mail and contacts" link and enter the required information for the email account from which you want to transfer contacts to Gmail. You need to know at least the email address and its associated username and password.

Step 4

Click "Start import" and wait for the automated import process to complete. Click the "Proceed" link and re-enter your email information for further confirmation, if prompted.

Import from a CSV File

Step 1

Log in to your Gmail account, click the "Gmail" pull-down menu located in the top left corner of your Gmail account and select "Contacts."

Step 2

Click the "More" button located at the top of your contacts list and select "Import" on the displayed menu.

Step 3

Click the "Choose File" button, browse to the location on your computer where your CSV file is saved and double-click it.

Step 4

Click the "Import" button to transfer your contacts into Gmail. When the process is complete, Gmail displays a message telling you how many contacts it successfully imported into your account.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're using Microsoft Outlook, the easiest way to transfer contacts to Gmail is to export them from Outlook to a Comma-Separated Values file. Once they're in the CSV format, you can import your contacts into Gmail using the CSV importation process outlined above. To export your contacts to a CSV file from Outlook 2013, click "File" on the main menu, then "Open & Export" and select "Import/Export" to launch Outlook's Import and Export Wizard. Click "Export to a file | Next | Comma Separated Values | Next." Select the account from which you want to export contacts and then click the "Contacts" link located under the name of the account. Click "Next," click the "Browse" button to select where on your computer you want to save the CSV file, and then click "Finish."
