How to Transfer Music in iTunes to New Computer

By Si Kingston

Many users organize their media files, especially those purchased from the iTunes Store, into playlists in the iTunes library. Unfortunately, the content in the iTunes library can't be transferred automatically once you register another version of iTunes on a new computer. To transfer the files, you must copy the iTunes folder. Any files listed in the iTunes library that are not located in the iTunes folder on the original computer will not be copied to the second computer.

Things You'll Need

  • USB flash drive or external storage device

Step 1

Launch the iTunes program on the original computer.

Step 2

Click the "File" menu in iTunes and select "Library."

Step 3

Click on "Organize Library" and place a check mark next to "Consolidate Library."

Step 4

Connect or insert a USB zip drive or other external storage device to the computer.

Step 5

Click on the "Start" menu and select the "Music" folder. Inside, right-click the "iTunes" folder and select "Copy."

Step 6

Step 7

Right-click in an empty space within the folder and select "Paste." Your iTunes library contents will be copied to the external storage device.
