How to Program RCA TV Remotes

Program Your Remote

If you recently purchased a TV or found an old remote and would like to know how to program it, but can't find the manual, don't get discouraged. You can easily program your remote. You can do a manual search for the codes or find them online at RCA's Remote Control Code Finder website as well as other websites. The process used to program the remote for your TV works for other devices as well (VCR, cable, etc).

Step 1

Turn on the TV you want the remote to control.

Step 2

Find the codes for the brand (Magnavox, Sony, etc.) of your TV. If you do not have your manual, check the Resources section for places where you can find codes for your RCA remote online.

Step 3

Press and hold the "CODE SEARCH" button until the indicator light comes on. Then, release the button. If your remote does not have a "CODE SEARCH" button, press and hold the "TV" button. The illuminated "ON·OFF" key will turn on and stay lit. Skip Step 4 but do not release the TV button until after Step 5.

Step 4

Press and release the TV button on the remote for the device. The indicator light should blink and then stay lit.

Step 5

Enter the first code for your device's brand using the number buttons. If done correctly, the indicator light will turn off. If the light flashes rapidly, it indicates that you typed in an invalid code. You will need to go back to Step 3 and try again.

Step 6

Point the remote at the TV and press the "ON-OFF" key. If the TV turns off, you have found the right code. If it does not, go back to Step 3 and try again using a different code for the brand or try using the code search method listed below.
