How to Create a Desktop Shortcut Icon Quickly

By Techwalla Contributor

When new computer programs are installed, most of them automatically install a desktop shortcut. The desktop shortcut icon makes it easier for the user to quickly access the program rather than going to the start menu and searching through all programs for the one wanted. If an installation did not set up a desktop shortcut icon, the user can do so manually.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Files

Step 1

Right-click on your desktop. Select "New" followed by "Shortcut."

Step 2

Click "Browse" and navigate to the program that needs a desktop shortcut.

Step 3

Click on the program or file. Select "Open" and then click on "Next." Enter a name for the shortcut. Click "Finish."

Step 4

Look on the desktop and you should see the new shortcut icon to the file displayed.
