Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy protection two weeks ago (gasp), which is likely part of the motivation behind the the company's new venture. The toy store giant announced that it's enticing customers to shop in its stores, as opposed to only shopping online, with a pretty cool new augmented reality app.
Play Chaser is the new app that will bring Toys R Us stores to life—digitally, that is. Download the app on your smartphone or tablet and scan the different Play Chaser signs located on Toys R Us shelves.
Kids will be able to do things like watch wildlife while on a safari, race trucks, shoot hoops, and choose a digital doll from the nursery to take home and care for. Some games have leaderboards that show where players rank amongst each other in their local store and nationally.
Here's a preview of the AR:
The app is completely free and doesn't include any in-app purchases or ads that could lead to accidental spending. The in-app currency is stars, and kids earn and spend them by completing different quests or games.
Play Chaser is currently testing in a small number of stores throughout the U.S. and will be rolled out nationwide on October 21st.
