How to Build Your Own Wireless Cell Phone Boosters

By Marshal M. Rosenthal

The convenience of a cell phone can be sorely tested when the signal inside your home is weak or nonexistent. You can build a cell phone booster that will dramatically increase the signal strength of the cell phone’s receiving antenna. A few hardware and common household supplies will be needed, along with some tools. Get adult supervision if you are underage, because a minor shouldn’t build the cell phone booster alone.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • 24-ounce empty aluminum can
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pliers

Step 1

Place a sheet of newspaper on a table. Stand the empty aluminum can on the newspaper. Stand the cell phone next to the aluminum can. Make a hole at the top of the cell phone into the aluminum can with the blade of the scissors. Place the cell phone aside.

Step 2

Cut off the top of the aluminum can with the scissors. Dispose of the cut-off piece of the aluminum can in the trash.

Step 3

Measure 2 inches up from the bottom of the aluminum can. Make a hole in the aluminum can with the blade of the scissors at the 2-inch mark. Cut around the aluminum can to remove the bottom. Dispose of the bottom of the aluminum can in the trash.

Step 4

Cut down the length of the aluminum can with the scissors until you reach the can’s bottom. Measure 8 inches across the aluminum can from the cut just made. Cut down the length of the aluminum can with the scissors at the 8-inch mark until you reach the can’s bottom.

Step 5

Cut across the bottom of the aluminum can between the two cuts. Pull the strip of aluminum out of the aluminum can with your fingers.

Step 6

Turn the aluminum can upside down on the newspaper. Clamp the jaws of the pliers against the top of the lid of the aluminum can where the strip of aluminum has been removed. Lift up on the jaws of the pliers. Repeat this procedure across the length of the aluminum can where the strip of aluminum has been removed.

Step 7

Stand the aluminum can right-side up on the newspaper.

Step 8

Clamp the jaws of the pliers against the bottom of the lid of the aluminum can where the strip of aluminum has been removed. Push down on the jaws of the pliers. Repeat this procedure across the length of the aluminum can where the strip of aluminum has been removed.

Step 9

Cut the ends off each side of the top of the aluminum can with the scissors at a right inward angle.

Step 10

Crimp both sides of the aluminum can with the jaws of the pliers.

Step 11

Crimp the cut-off ends of each side of the top of the aluminum can with the jaws of the pliers.

Step 12

Hammer down the inside bottom of the aluminum can with the jaws of the pliers.

Step 13

Stand the cell phone up inside of the aluminum can that is now a cell phone booster.
