How to Capture a Webinar for Free

Webinar is short for Web-based seminar. A webinar allows you to both send and receive information, as opposed to a webcast, where you can only receive information. Webinars can be expensive when given by professionals, so you may want to capture a webinar to review it at a later time. There are a number of free screencasting programs that will allow you to capture a webinar for free.

Step 1

Learn about free screencasting software. Three free options include VirtualDub, CamStudio and Wink. Each software has advantages and drawbacks and which one is appropriate for you will depend on your situation. Choose the program that will work best for you.

Step 2

Learn to create screen captures with the screencasting software you choose. Free software does not usually come with a detailed user manual. Look at online help guides and ask for guidance in user forums if you are having trouble. Pay attention to the support options available when you choose and download a screencasting software.

Step 3

Run the screencasting program. Prepare the program to capture a video. Open the webinar well before it begins and set up the screen the way you want to capture it.

Step 4

Record the webinar. Begin the screen capture as soon as the webinar begins. Continue running the screencasting software and capturing the screen for the duration of the webinar. Participate in the webinar as though you were not capturing the screen; the capture will run in the background.

Step 5

Stop the screen capture when the webinar ends. Preview the video before you save it to your hard drive. Save the captured webinar to your hard drive in your preferred video format. Popular options include AVI and WMV.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer is not fast enough to capture the screen and allow you to participate in the webinar, you can open the screencasting software and webinar on a second computer dedicated only to capturing the webinar.
