How to Change the Network Password on a Verizon Router

By Abby Vaun

If you have wireless Internet service through Verizon, you can change your wireless network password yourself. If you don't change the default password and network name, not only can anyone use your connection, but you are leaving your files and Internet activity exposed and vulnerable to hackers. Along with protecting your information, securing the network with a unique password removes the possibility of someone performing illegal activity, such as downloading copyrighted materials, on your wireless Internet account.

Step 1

Type "" into the address bar in your browser window.

Step 2

Enter your username and password in the corresponding text fields on the "Login" page. If you didn't change the username or password during installation, enter "admin" for the username and the default password "password." If the default password does not work, it may have been changed to the router's serial number, which can be found on the label sticker on the bottom or back of the router.

Step 3

Click "Wireless Settings" from the top of the page.

Step 4

Click "Basic Security Settings" from the menu on the left of the screen.

Step 5

Choose what type of WEP password you want under the "5. Select a WEP Key" heading. If you choose 64/40 bit, your new password has to be 10 characters long. 128/108 bit requires a password 26 characters long. The password can only contain the letters A to F and/or the numbers 0 to 9.

Step 6

Enter the new password in the text field provided and click "Apply."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also change the wireless network name in the section titled "2. Change the SSID setting to any name or code you want."
  • Write your network name and password down in a safe place in case you forget them.
  • Do a hard reset of your router if you can't remember the username and password. Press the reset button for 10 seconds with the end of a paper clip while the router is on. Look for the reset button on the back or bottom of the router. After 15 seconds, the router is reset to the default settings and you can perform the steps to change the password.
