How to Convert VLC Files to MP4 With Subtitles

By Adrian Grahams

The free VLC Media Player includes a selection of advanced features, such as a conversion tool to output video files in MP4 and other formats. You can use the VLC conversion tool to create an MP4 video with subtitles, as long as the source video clip includes subtitle captions.

Step 1

Launch the VLC Media Player. Click “Media” in the main navigation menu bar. Select “Convert/Save” from the menu to launch the Open Media window.

Step 2

Click the “Add” button. Go to the folder that contains the video file with subtitles that you want to convert to MP4 format. Double-click the file to import it to the VLC Media Player.

Step 3

Click the “Convert/Save” button at the bottom of the window. Select “Convert” from the drop-down list to open the Convert box.

Step 4

Click the “Profile” button. Select the “Video H. 264 + AAC (MP4)” option from the drop-down list.

Step 5

Click “Browse” in the Destination section. Set a save location for the converted video file. Type a name for the output video file in the “File Name” box. Append the file name with “.mp4” because VLC doesn’t add the file extension automatically.

Step 6

Click the “Start” button. VLC converts the file to MP4 format and outputs the file to your selected location.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your computer must have an MP4 video codec installed to encode a video file in MP4 format. This is usually installed along with the VLC Media Player. Alternatively, you can download free video codecs from digital video resource websites.
