How to Create a PFX

A public-key cryptography standards certificate is a file for encrypting sensitive documents and validating digital signatures. This certificate has a .pfx file extension. The file contains an encrypted private key and a public key. It is created with Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader. Adobe Acrobat is a free program available for download.

  • Adobe Acrobat

Step 1

Open Adobe Acrobat. Double-click the desktop icon or launch it from the "Start" menu.

Step 2

Click the "Advanced" tab. Choose "Security Settings."

Step 3

Click "Digital IDS." Choose "Add ID."

Step 4

Click "A new digital ID I want to create now." Choose "Next."

Step 5

Navigate to the folder in which you wish to save the file. Choose "Next."

Step 6

Click "New PKCS#12 digital ID file."

Step 7

Fill out the personal information questions. Include at least your name and email address. Click "OK."
