How to Create Your Own UPC

The UPC bar code is used to assign a unique number to a product that is being sold. This allows you to track the number of units that have been sold and the amount of inventory that is available. UPC stands for universal product code and a UPC is required on nearly all products that are sold in the United States. You can create your own UPC by installing a UPC bar code program and then using a word program to print them.

Things You'll Need

  • UPC bar codes program
  • Microsoft Word

Step 1

Download the trial version of the UPC bar codes program from Elfring Fonts. Save the file to the C drive or your desktop. Double-click the "barcupcs.exe" file to install the program.

Step 2

Enter the information for the UPC bar code using the "UPC Bar Code Utility." Click the start button and go to "Programs." Go to the Elfring Bar Code program group and then click "Utility."

Step 3

Select the type of bar code from the "Type Selection." A standard 12-digit bar code is type "A." Select "None" under the Supplemental selection. Enter the bar code number in the "Enter your 11- or 12-digit UPC code" field. Click the "Make" button to generate the UPC bar code.

Step 4

Click the "Copy" button to copy the UPC bar code to the Windows clipboard.

Step 5

Double-click the Microsoft Word icon on the desktop to open the program.

Step 6

Click the Tools drop down and highlight "Letters and Mailings." Select the option for "Envelopes and Labels."

Step 7

Go to the "Label" tab click the mouse so that the cursor is in the address box. Click the "Edit" drop-down and select the "Paste" option.

Step 8

Click the label box that is in the lower right corner of the window. This will display the "Label Options" window.

Step 9

Select "Address" from the product number selection and then click the "OK" button.

Step 10

Click the "New Document" button to display the template. Click the "Edit" drop-down and select the "Select All" option.

Step 11

Click the "Format" drop-down and select the "Font" option. Select the type of font from the font list and the size of the font from the size list.

Step 12

View the UPC bar code in the "Preview" window and then click the "OK" button. Click the file drop-down and then select "Print" to print the UPC bar codes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use a program, such as UPCTools, to print a UPC bar code.
  • You cannot print and use UPC bar codes without first purchasing a bar code assignment from the GS1 US Bar Codes and eCom website.
