How to Delete Chat History in Skype

By Josh Baum

Skype is a program used around the world to communicate via video, voice and chat. When you use this program to chat with others, it saves a complete log of all chats indefinitely as a default setting. If you share your computer with others and would prefer to delete your chat history to protect your privacy, it only takes a few seconds.

Step 1

Launch your version of Skype.

Step 2

Click the Tools menu at the top of the window, then select "Options."

Step 3

Click the "Privacy" button on the left side of the Options screen. (If you are using a version of Skype older than v. 1.2, this does not apply.)

Step 4

Locate and click the "Clear Chat History" button. Confirm the action if you're prompted to do so. The chat history is now clear.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also edit the length of time Skype keeps chat histories within the privacy section of the Skype options screen. There is a drop-down menu full of options, including the option to not record any chat history.
