How to Design Your Own House Plan Online for Free

By Quinten Plummer

Construct the house of your dreams with the help of an online house plan utility. With the help of a free online utility, you can create a virtual reference for the blueprints of your dream house. And thanks to the intuitive design of many online house plan utilities, you won't need a background in architecture to construct a professional house design.

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access

Step 1

Use SmallBluePrinter's online 3D floor planning tool to design a house plan. The lightweight utility lets you drag and drop house components, such as walls and windows, onto a grid to compile a floor plan--and because the utility is web-based, there's no software to install. After you've constructed your floor plan, you can click on the "3D Walkthrough" option to take a virtual tour through your house plan, though you won't get details such as furnishings and a wide selection of paint colors that you would find with a full-featured utility.

Step 2

Sign up for a free FloorPlanner account to design a house plan online. With FloorPlanner, you can build a virtual house blueprint from a template, such as "Mansion" or "Flat," or you can design a house from scratch. FloorPlanner lets you edit every component of the house. Furnishings can be sized to scale, and the dimensions of rooms can be tailored to the inch. Floors of the house can be viewed in either 2D or 3D.

Step 3

Design a custom house plan with Original Home's house plan utility. Original Home lets you customize the elements of one of the site's 11 house plan templates. You can customize everything from the ceiling height and stud width to the siding materials and colors. After you're satisfied with your design, you can print the file or send it to an email account for free.
