How to Download Free Movies Safely
There are many movies available for free download on the Internet. Many, however, are carriers of viruses and malware. The safe sources to download free movies are mainly offering films drawn from the public domain or special promotions from the film companies. Keeping a few free movies on a laptop or handheld device can be a great way to stave off boredom during expected waits.
Avoid peer to peer swapping sites as there is little security from viruses and malware. Also, these files are often illegal copies.
Select the type of file desired. MPEG-2 is basically DVD quality and rarely found. More common are MPEG-1 (VCD), WMV (Window Media Viewer) and MPEG-4 (which will play on video iPods and similar devices).
Find a source of legal movie downloads, such as public domain films or films being distributed for free by the owners. Investigate the site before downloading anything; anyone offering downloads of questionable legality should be avoided.
Search the source for desired movies and download. Download times vary greatly, although it should be remembered that MPEG-4 files are usually the smallest and quickest to transfer. Move file to desired device location when the download is complete.
Run antivirus software regularly to prevent accidental infection just to be safe.
Tips & Warnings
- Determine what type of files the intended player is able to use before taking the time to download files that turn out to be in the wrong format.
- Some portable devices, such as PDAs, phones or game systems, may require a conversion from the common movie formats to a proprietary format.
