How to Fix My HP Printer

By Nina Nixon

Like other brands, Hewlett Packard, or HP, printers can display symptoms ranging from the simple to complex. Therefore, it can be a challenge to determine exactly where the best place is to begin troubleshooting. Just like all printers, some HP printer-associated problems seem to result from driver compatibility issues with the many different hardware and software it tries to connect to with. However, before you automatically go that route, it is worth your while to first rule out some other possible causes.

Step 1

Check the cables connecting the printer to the computer to make sure they fit snugly.

Step 2

Refresh the printer connection. To do this, click "Start" and then choose "Control Panel" and then pick "Printers and Faxes."

Step 3

Double-click on the HP printer and select "Printer" from the toolbar menu.

Step 4

Click "View" and then click "Refresh."

Step 5

Go to the "General" tab and see if you can print a test page.

Tips & Warnings

  • When it comes to maintenance, peripherals are often forgotten until there is a problem. You can increase the life of your printer, faxes and scanners by checking their performance at least once or twice a year, whatever is manageable for you.
