How to Fix SVCHost.Exe in Windows XP

Svchost.exe, an essential part of the Windows XP operating system, combines several Windows processes into one executable file. Included in Svchost.exe is the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) process. XP users who download Hotfix 916089, but do not download the latest patch, Hotfix 927891, may experience errors related to Svchost.exe when attempting to apply updates to any programs using Microsoft Windows Installer. To rectify this error, you must download and install Hotfix 927891 to your computer.

Step 1

Go to the Microsoft Download Center and download patch 927891 to the main directory on your computer.

Step 2

Restart your computer. Press "F8" before Windows XP's startup screen appears.

Step 3

Use the directional pad to select "Windows Safe Mode" from the list of options. Hit "Enter."

Step 4

Log in as an administrator. Right-click "Start," then click "Explore." Navigate to the main directory, then double-click the file "WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe."

Step 5

Follow the onscreen instructions to install the patch to your computer. Restart your PC after the patch install is complete.
