How to Get Into Your Computer If You Forgot the Password
Forgetting a computer password is not the end of the world, although it might seem that way at the time. There are a number of free utilities that you can use to "hack" into your own system. These utilities will reset your password, granting you access to your machine so you can set a new password, which you should promptly write down for safekeeping.
Things You'll Need
- Unlocked PC
- Blank CD
- NT Password and Registry Editor (linked below)
- CD Burning Software
On another PC, download the free NT Password and Registry Editor (linked below). Save the boot image for the CD to your hard drive, then burn the file to a blank CD using any commercially available (or free) CD burning software. This will create a boot disk that you can use to break into your computer.
Insert the CD created during step one into your computer. Restart the PC, and press any key when indicated during the startup messages to boot from CD. This will initialize the password cracking process.
Indicate to the machine which drive contains your version of Windows (typically the "C" drive) by using the drop down menu.
Select the option to "Reset Password" when presented with the option. The program can also modify your registry and perform a number of other functions, but the only option with which you should be concerned is password removal. This will initiate the automated procedure to reset your Windows password.
