How to Get Past Survey Widgets

By Matt Wooddy

Pop-ups and widgets may provide useful information for some websites, while others prohibit users from accessing content before completing a form. Web developers continue to implement surveys and other eye-catching features into sites, sometimes including graphical user interface, or GUI, widgets for such tasks. Sometimes these widgets and pop-ups interfere with the user experience, but there are ways to bypass them.

Surveys Blocking Video

Step 1

Navigate to the target website and attempt to load the content. When a survey widget pops up and obscures your view of a web page's video, right click anywhere outside of this widget to load a menu of options.

Step 2

Select the “View Page Source” option from the browser's menu when you have right clicked on the screen. This loads an alternate window that shows all of the HTML used to create this particular web page.

Step 3

Hit “Ctrl” and “F” to search this page source for the word “embed.” The neighboring URL for this embed code contains the necessary address for your video file. Copy this URL to your clipboard.

Step 4

Paste the video link into your browser's address bar and hit “Enter” on your keyboard. The video loads and the rest of the site's content and survey widgets disappear.

Browser Plug-Ins and Extensions

Step 1

Download the SkipScreen plug-in if you have the Mozilla Firefox browser. There is an extension available for Google Chrome users, but the application is still in beta testing at time of publication. Follow the instructions for installation, then restart your browser for the application to work properly. Authorize any changes that need to be made to your browser for the application to install properly. This application works with many of the download sites that make users wait through advertisement screens, but SkipScreen also helps block the integration of survey widgets.

Step 2

Install the Bypass Survey extension for Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser. Bypass Survey works to eliminate survey widgets and pop-ups that may load while browsing web pages. Follow the list of instructions for installation, then restart your browser to complete. Once you navigate to a page with a survey widget, a window prompt asks you if you would like to bypass the survey. Click “OK” to continue browsing the original content of the site and bypass the survey widget.

Step 3

Obtain the XJZ Survey Removal Bookmarklet tool from the Survey Remover website. This add-on works with both Chrome and Firefox. It allows users to navigate web content without pop-up and widget surveys. Once installed, a window prompt will let users know that a survey has been blocked. Simply click “OK” on this prompt to continue browsing normally.
