How to Get Rid of a Pop-Up Virus
A pop-up is a new browser window which opens itself onto your screen without your permission. A pop-up can be very frustrating. However, a pop-up virus can be debilitating, as it can continually open itself up onto your screen to the point that you can no longer use your computer. There are numerous ways to get rid of a pop-up virus.
Prevent pop-ups from occurring in the first place. The two most popular software companies that create software to prevent pop-ups are McAfee and Symantec, according to The New York Times (July 5, 2009). Both companies offer software which can be purchased on-line and at many computing stores (See References.) However, a host of software companies offer pop-up prevention programs that can be downloaded for free. Many of these programs can be found at the link below.
Download a program designed to remove pop-up viruses. There are many programs specifically designed to remove pop-up viruses. One of the more popular programs is Spyware Doctor. Spyware Doctor has won numerous awards from leading computing magazines. (See Resource 2.) The software is available for download at the link below, although it is not free.
Join a forum and post the specific details of your virus. Viruses come in many forms and some viruses require specific steps to be removed. There are several forums run by computer technicians who, once you register (usually for free), will allow you to post the details of your virus. Once you post the details, a trained expert in the field will respond with steps to remove the virus. In order to get the most out of these sites, be specific when you post your problem. Include the type of computer and operating system you are using, and be sure to describe the virus as specifically as possible. A link to one of these forums is available below.
Initiate a system recovery. If the above solutions do not solve the problem, you may need to initiate a system recovery. (See Reference 3.) To do this, you must back up all of your files. This is important because a system recovery will delete everything on your computer. Moreover, you may need to order a recovery disc from your computer manufacturer (which usually costs around $20). Different operating systems have different recovery procedures and thus you should consult with your computer manufacturer before attempting a system recovery.
