How to Get Rid of the McAfee Update Popup

By Amanda Kondolojy

One of the benefits to having McAfee security software on your computer is that it uses a convenient pop-up system to let you know about important security updates, as well as updates to the software itself. If you don't want to see these pop-ups any more, you will need to enable McAfee's "Gaming Mode". This mode suppresses pop-up notifications. While it is intended to only suppress pop-ups while you are playing a game, you can use enable this setting for as long as you want.

Step 1

Double-click the McAfee "M" icon in your system tray to launch your McAfee dashboard.

Step 2

Click on "Personal Firewall" and then select "Options". Then click on "Alert" settings. You will see a list of options pertaining to your pop-up settings.

Step 3

Find the "Enable Gaming Mode" option and click on the checkbox next to it. Click "OK" to save the settings. All pop-up activity will cease.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although pop-ups will be disabled, automatic updates will still be downloaded.
  • Important notifications will be suppressed in Gaming Mode, so double check your McAfee dashboard regularly to make sure there isn't anything requiring immediate action.
