How to Get Sound on Your Computer

If your computer has built-in speakers or you have a pair of external speakers connected to your system, you can get your computer to play back sounds and audio from other sources, including music and movies. If you still cannot get sound on your computer after following these steps, make sure that your speakers are properly connected and turned on.

Things You'll Need

  • PC or Mac computer

PC Instructions

Step 1

Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Step 2

Double-click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel icon.

Step 3

Go to the "Audio" tab at the top of the control panel window.

Step 4

Use the "Sound playback" drop-down list to select the audio source that you want to use for the playback of sounds.

Step 5

Go to the "Volume" tab at the top of the window.

Step 6

Adjust the "Device volume" meter to increase or decrease the volume of sounds.

Mac Instructions

Step 1

Open System Preferences by clicking on the icon in the Dock.

Step 2

Go to the "Sound" control panel underneath the "Hardware" heading.

Step 3

Go to the "Output" tab at the top of the window.

Step 4

Click on the audio source that you want to use for sound playback to enable it.

Step 5

Adjust the "Output volume" meter to increase or decrease the volume of sounds.
