How to Import Music Files to iTunes
Transferring music files from a CD or computer into iTunes is a straightforward process, since iTunes is pretty user-friendly software. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you easily import your music files into iTunes, so you can transfer them to your iPod and take your tunes with you wherever you go.
Things You'll Need
- Computer (with a CD/DVD drive)
- iTunes software
- Digital music files
To Import Digital Music Files from a CD
Download iTunes software from the website www.itunes.com. Make sure the program is running and open before you begin.
Insert your music CD into your computer CD drive. The CD information will pop up in the iTunes program.
Click on the CD name, and a full list of songs should appear. Check which songs you would like to import, or leave them all selected if you’d like to import the whole CD.
Click the iTunes button: “Import CD” on the bottom right of the screen. As the files are imported, the progress will be displayed at the top of the screen. A green check mark will appear next to each song when it completes importing.
Click “Eject CD” after the files are imported.
To Import Digital Music Files from Your Computer
Repeat step 1 from importing music files from a CD.
Create a folder on your computer, and copy the songs you’d like to import into the folder. This will make it easier to transfer the songs to iTunes, as they can be imported as a group.
Click “Add to Library” on the iTunes file menu.
Select the folder of music you’d like to import.
iTunes will automatically import the files.
Tips & Warnings
- iTunes will automatically import audio files from your computer or compact disc if they are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, AppleLossless or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have music files in other formats, you can convert them to an acceptable format using iTunes. Simply open the iTunes “Preferences” menu, click the “General” button, then click “Importing Settings.” An “Import Using” menu will pop up, and from there, you can select the format you want to convert your music files to -- for example MP3 -- and click OK to save the settings. Finally, select the music file you want to convert, then open the “Advanced” menu, and the format you selected will be displayed -- for example “Create MP3 version.” Select that option, and the file will automatically convert.
