How to Insert Tags in Craigslist Ads

By Elle Smith

Craigslist is one of the most well-known and successful classified advertising sources in the world. Not only is it free, it's easy to use and has a huge audience of eager lookers, buyers, sellers and seekers. If you want to create a more eye-catching ad than the standard, text-only Craigslist ad, you can insert HTML tags to embed objects, create headlines, add bullet points or other content. All you need is a basic understanding of HTML.

Things You'll Need

  • Craiglist account
  • HTML knowledge

Step 1

Log in to your Craigslist account by entering your email address or handle and password. Click the "Post New Ad In" pull-down button to select your area, then click "Go."

Step 2

Click the radial button next to the category in which you want to post, then click "Continue." Choose a sub-category, if applicable, then choose the area closest to you. Enter a price, title and location in the "Create Posting" window.

Step 3

Enter the text that describes your item or event. Insert your HTML tags sparingly to create bold headlines or larger text. Insert tags to create bulleted lists or new paragraphs. If you use HTML in any part of the ad, you must continue to use it throughout the posting.

Step 4

Emphasize text with italic or underline tags. Create a block quote of detail. Change the color of the text. Craigslist supports 10 text colors. Make sure all the tags are closed for best results.

Step 5

Add a URL to direct readers to outside links, but be sure to include the "http://" in front of the address or Craigslist will not recognize it. Add externally hosted images for maximum impact for your goods or services.

Step 6

Use your HTML in the body of the document, not in the title. Forgo inserting JavaScript, Flash or applets; Craigslist doesn't support those.

Step 7

Click "Continue" to create the ad. Double-check your links and tags to make sure they are correct before your submit the ad to Craigslist.
