How to Insert the GIF on Tumblr

By Sarah Barnes

GIFs were first introduced in the 1990s as cartoon-like, graphical animated images you could add to your website to give it some "flair." These days, GIFs can be made from clips of movies, TV shows and online videos. Animated GIF memes are popular among Tumblr users; if you know of a GIF not yet making the rounds on your dashboard, you can upload it yourself. If you know how to upload a JPG or other photo file types to Tumblr, then you know how to upload a GIF; the site treats them as photos.

Photo Post

Step 1

Log in to your Tumblr dashboard and click the "Photo" item to post a new photo.

Step 2

Click "Choose File" to upload the photo from your hard drive, then find the photo on your computer and click "Open." If the GIF is located on another website, click "Use a URL instead" and paste the URL of the photo into the text box that pops up.

Step 3

Add a caption, content source and/or tags, then click "Create post" to post your GIF.
