How to Install a Java Plugin for Firefox

By Steve Gregory

Java is a cross-platform programming language that works on most computer operating systems and websites. Many websites use Java technology to power applications, games, video and audio. Installing a Java plugin in your Firefox browser will allow you to access Java-based content. The Java plugin is free to add on to the Firefox browser and you can install it in less than five minutes.

Step 1

Double-click the Firefox icon on your desktop to open a new browser window.

Step 2

Click "Tools" at the top of the browser on the main menu bar. Click "Add-ons" from the drop-down menu. A new "Add-ons" window will open.

Step 3

Select the "Get Add-ons" tab. Type "Java" in the search box to bring up a list of available Java plugins.

Step 4

Select the latest version of the Java plugin that is available. For example, choose Java Console Plugin version 6.0.02 over version 6.0.00.

Step 5

Click the "Add to Firefox" button. The Java plugin will automatically download and install. You will receive notification when the installation is successful.

Step 6

Restart Firefox. Close the browser and reopen it to activate the plugin. You can also activate the plugin by navigating to "Tools" from the main menu, selecting "Add-ons" and clicking on the "Plugins" tab. Scroll down the list until you find the Java plugin, select it and click the "Enable" button.
