How to Load a Flash Drive on to a Mac

A flash drive is a portable storage device that is inserted into the USB ports of computers in order to transfer various types of files. Flash drives are also sometimes referred to as USB drives, thumb drives and jump drives. Loading a flash drive onto your iMac or Macbook computer is a simple process, and it's also important to know how to properly open folders, transfer files and remove the flash drive. When transferring files, you should also make sure that you have sufficient space available on your flash drive.

Things You'll Need

  • Flash drive
  • Mac computer

Step 1

Locate the USB port on your Mac and then insert the flash drive into it. Allow a minute for the drive to load onto your computer.

Step 2

Go to your desktop and locate the white USB drive icon. Double-click on the "USB drive" icon and all of the files located in the drive will appear.

Step 3

Hold down the "Apple" key to select more than one item within the folder or folders of your flash drive. Move the selected files to the desired folder on your computer and they will transfer over.

Step 4

Add files to your flash drive by moving any selected folders or files into the flash drive screen. Don't remove your flash drive while files are being transferred.

Step 5

Close out of the flash drive window and click on the "USB drive" icon on your desktop. Move the icon to the "Trash" icon. Don't remove your flash drive until a message appears that says your flash drive has been properly removed.
