How to Make Double Line Graphs on Excel

By Kathryn Hatashita-Lee

Microsoft Excel 2010 can plot two data series on one chart area. For example, a double line chart can contain two data series that represent daytime and nighttime temperatures over a period of time. Excel’s gallery of double line charts includes six “2-D Line” and one “3-D Line.” Each data series displays a different color on the plot area. The category data displays along the horizontal axis. The value data displays along the vertical axis.

Step 1

Open the Excel worksheet that contains the data values.

Step 2

Click and drag on the categories and two data series you want to plot.

Step 3

Click the “Insert” tab in the Command Ribbon.

Step 4

Click the arrow for the “Line” button in the Charts group. A gallery of seven thumbnail charts appears.

Step 5

Click the preferred chart sub-type.

Step 6

Click “OK.” The two data series convert to a line graph. The Chart Tools Ribbon displays.

Step 7

Customize the chart with the commands in the Chart Tools Ribbon. Chart Tools contains three tabs: “Design,” “Layout” and “Format.” Experiment with the commands in each tab to increase readability and add visual interest. For example, the Design tab contains 12 chart layouts and 48 chart styles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Line charts with markers indicate individual data values. The markers look like squares or diamond symbols.
  • The “3-D Line” chart displays a data series as a colored 3-D ribbon.
