How to Make Google Chrome the Default Browser

By Michael Batton Kaput

Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser and Mozilla Firefox have been two mainstays on the Internet browser market. In 2008, that changed when Google released its Chrome web browser. When trying out the new browser, you may switch between Chrome and its competitors. But if you've decided to make the switch to Google Chrome, you can set it as your default web browser with a few clicks of the mouse.

Step 1

Double-click on the Google Chrome icon on your desktop to open the browser.

Step 2

Click on the icon shaped like a wrench in the toolbar at the top of the screen.

Step 3

Click "Options." Click "Preferences" if using a Mac-based system.

Step 4

Open the Basics tab.

Step 5

Click "Make Google Chrome my default browser" in the section labeled "Default Browser."
