How to Make Your Printer Only Print With Black Ink

By Diana Braun

Printer ink can be expensive, and with lengthy documents and heavily saturated images, ink can run out fast. Most printers contain a black ink cartridge along with a color cartridge or several individual ink cartridges. Replacing color ink cartridges is often more expensive than replacing black ink cartridges, so you may want to print your documents using black ink only when your color ink cartridge is low or the document contains heavy amounts of text and very little color.

Step 1

Click the "Start" menu.

Step 2

Type "printers" in the search box and press the "Enter" key.

Step 3

Right-click the printer of choice and click "Printing Preferences."

Step 4

Click the "Main" tab from the Printing Preferences window.

Step 5

Check the box next to "Grayscale Printing."

Step 6

Click the "Apply" button and the "OK" button to save your changes. The next time you print a document, it will only print using black ink.
