How to Organize iPhone Contacts Into Groups

You can organize your iPhone contacts into custom groups using the address book application on your computer. As of August 2011, you can not create custom groups from within the iPhone address book interface but you can easily sync groups from the native address book client on your computer using iTunes. Just sort your contacts into groups on your computer and then sync your iPhone to organize your iPhone contacts.

Windows

Step 1

Connect the iPhone to your computer using the appropriate USB cable. If iTunes does not automatically launch, click "Start" and select "All Programs," then "iTunes."

Step 2

Select your iPhone from the "Devices" section of the left sidebar.

Step 3

Select the "Info" tab.

Step 4

Click the check box beside "Sync Contacts with" and then select "Windows Contacts" from the drop-down menu. Click "Apply" to save your sync settings.

Step 5

Click the "Sync" button to sync your contacts to your computer. Continue to the next step once synchronization is complete.

Step 6

Click "Start" and select "All Programs." then "Windows Contacts."

Step 7

Click the "New Contact Group" button in the "Windows Contacts" toolbar.

Step 8

Type a name for the contact group and then click "Add to Contact Group."

Step 9

Select the contacts you want to include in the contact group and then click "Add."

Step 10

Click "OK" to save the contact group. Create additional contact groups using the same process.

Step 11

Return to iTunes and press the "Sync" button to sync your contact groups to the iPhone.

Mac

Step 1

Connect the iPhone to your computer using the appropriate USB cable. Launch iTunes if it does not start automatically.

Step 2

Select your iPhone from the "Devices" section of the left sidebar.

Step 3

Select the "Info" tab.

Step 4

Click the check box beside "Sync Address Book Contacts." Click "Apply" to save your sync settings.

Step 5

Click the "Sync" button to sync your contacts to your computer. Continue to the next step once synchronization is complete.

Step 6

Launch Address Book.

Step 7

Click the "+" button in the "Groups" column.

Step 8

Type a name for the group and then click "OK."

Step 9

Drag and drop contacts from the "Name" contact to the newly created group to add contacts to that group.

Step 10

Create additional contact groups using the same process.

Step 11

Return to iTunes and press the "Sync" button to sync your contact groups to the iPhone.

Tips & Warnings

  • When adding new contacts on your iPhone, first navigate to the group in which you want to add a contact before tapping the "+" button to store that contact in a custom group.
