Not that long ago, standing in line for hours to pay vehicle taxes or renew vehicle registration was a common occurrence in many places. Because government offices are often open only during regular business hours, many people have to take time off from work to visit those offices to pay the vehicle tax. Today, a better option is available; the option of paying your vehicle tax online. Paying your vehicle tax online offers you the convenience and flexibility of paying your bill from your home and at a time that works for you.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer with Internet connection
  • Tax notice
  • Driver's license
  • Insurance card
  • License plate number
  • Credit card

Step 1

Check your registration renewal or tax notice for a website address for the taxing authority. If you do not have a renewal or tax notice, run a Google search for your state's department of transportation.

Step 2

Check the department of transportation website for your state to see if the department offers online payment for registration renewal/vehicle tax.

Step 3

Click the option for online payment of registration/tax.

Step 4

Input the personal information required by the state in order to pay your tax online. Documents you may need include your driver's license, insurance card with policy number and the license plate number for your vehicle.

Step 5

Input your credit card information to make the online payment and submit the information. Print the confirmation screen or email for your records.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many states do not allow for online tax payment if the payment is past due. To prevent from making a personal appearance at the tax office, be sure to pay your tax before the due date has passed.
