How to Play RM Files in a VLC Player

By Andrew Schrader

RM files (Real Media), developed by Real Networks, are one of the most popular formats for streaming video over the Internet. Although designed mainly for the common Real Media Player, you can also play (and even convert) RM streams you have saved to your computer using VLC Media Player (a free, open-source video player and transcoder from Videolan.org). Before you begin, be sure to upgrade to the latest version of VLC Media Player to ensure compatibility with any newer RM files.

Step 1

Launch your web browser and visit the download page for VLC Media Player. Click the "Download VLC" button in the middle of the page to download the latest version of the software. Double-click the ".exe" application file to run through the setup process. Agree to the terms of use and launch VLC.

Step 2

Click the "Media" tab at the top of VLC's main menu and select the "Streaming" button to enter the "Open" window.

Step 3

Navigate to the bottom of the window. Click the "Filter" drop-down box and select the "All Files (*)" option.

Step 4

Select your RM stream in the middle of the window and click the "Play" button.

Step 5

Click the "Play Locally" button in the "Stream Output" window and click the "Stream" button at the bottom of the page to view your RM file in VLC.
