How to Plug Your iPhone to the TV

By Adrian Grahams

Watching downloaded movies, TV shows or video clips on the Apple iPhone is a convenient way to keep entertained while you're on the move. If you want to watch videos downloaded to your iPhone while you're at home then you might prefer the comfort of watching them on a larger screen. You can plug your iPhone into a television set with an Apple iPhone audio-visual connection cable. This displays the output from the iPhone screen on the TV set. You will also need to adjust the iPhone's settings to ensure the video displays correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Apple component or composite audio-visual cable

Step 1

Plug one end of the audio-visual connection cable into the iPhone and the other end into the component video or composite video jacks on the TV set.

Step 2

Tap the "Settings" icon on the iPhone home screen, and then select "iPod" from the settings options.

Step 3

Locate "TV Out" in the iPod settings options.

Step 4

Move the tab beside the "Widescreen" option to the "On" position if you're connecting the iPhone to a widescreen television set.

Step 5

Tap "TV Signal" and select the correct format from the drop-down menu. Select the "NTSC" setting for the United States, or "PAL" if you live in Europe.

Step 6

Push the home button below the iPhone screen to exit the settings menu.

Step 7

Press the "AV" or "EXT" button on the TV remote control handset until you find the correct channel to view the iPhone signal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy an approved Apple audio-visual cable. Check the type of video connection on your TV set before purchasing the cable. You will find this in the user guide or help documentation that came with the TV set.
