How to Read a Text Message on the iPhone App

By Spanner Spencer

The iPhone is a range of Internet and multimedia-equipped smartphones designed and built by Apple. A variety of different software applications are built into the iPhone, granting you access to features such as email, Web browsing, multimedia messaging and SMS text messaging. The iPhone keeps a record of previously sent and received text messages, laying them out in individual conversation windows so you can read your messages in the order they were received.

Step 1

Launch the Messages application on the iPhone by tapping its icon on the home screen. A list of previous text message conversations will be displayed, with the newest additions at the top of the screen.

Step 2

Tap the entry for the conversation you want to read. A history of messages sent between you and the other party will be displayed in chronological order.

Step 3

Scroll to the bottom of the conversation window to read the latest text message received.

Step 4

Tap the text field at the bottom of the screen to type a reply to the current conversation, and then press the "Send" button. Press the "Messages" button in the upper-left corner to return to the list of existing conversations.

  • When you receive a new message a notification window will pop up on the iPhone. You can go straight to the message in the Messages app by tapping the "View" button in the pop up window.
  • You can remove individual messages or a full conversation by tapping the "Edit" button in the upper-right corner of the conversation's screen.
