How to Recover a Previous Version of a Word File

You don't have to use Microsoft Word if you want to recover a previous version of a file created using that software. Windows has native support for the recovery of a previous version of a file, available directly from that particular file's "Properties" utility. Using Windows Explorer, you can recover the previous version of a Microsoft Word document in a matter of seconds.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows Explorer

Step 1

Right-click on the Word document you'd like to restore to a previous version.

Step 2

Click "Properties."

Step 3

Click the "Previous Versions" tab.

Step 4

Click once on the listing for the previous version of the Word document you'd like to recover.

Step 5

Click the "Restore" button to restore your Word document back to the selected version.
