How to Reduce an Image Size

By Alan Okpechi

Microsoft Paint is a built-in application that comes installed on every Microsoft Windows operating system. Microsoft Paint allows users to modify images in a variety of ways, including reducing image sizes. Reducing an image size decreases the file size of the image, allowing faster transfer through email or copying to portable media.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Paint

Step 1

Launch Microsoft Paint. Click on "File" and select "Open" in the main menu bar of Microsoft Paint. Double-click on the image you want to reduce.

Step 2

Click on "Image" in the main menu bar once the selected image is accessed.

Step 3

Select "Stretch and Skew" under the "Image" menu.

Step 4

Type a number indicating the percentage you want to reduce the image in the "Horizontal" and "Vertical" entry boxes. These boxes are located in the upper-most "Stretch" section. To retain equal proportions, enter identical numbers.

Step 5

Click "OK."

Step 6

Press "Ctrl + S" if satisfied with the image modifications.

Step 7

Press "Ctrl + Z" to undo the image reduction and follow the previous steps until the desired image size is attained.
