How to Remove Malware From a Laptop

By Kyle Anderson

Malicious software, also known as malware, is a term that describes software programs that are created to do some type of harm to your laptop computer. Whether this harm involves stealing your files and personal information, erasing your laptop's hard drive or spying on what you are writing, malware is not a good thing to have on your computer. Fortunately, with the help of free antimalware software, you can remove the malware from your laptop and make it safe to use again.

Step 1

Restart your computer, tapping the "F8" key several times as the computer starts up. Select the "Safe Mode with Networking" option from the menu. This will start the computer in Safe Mode, which makes it easier to remove malware from the computer.

Step 2

Open a web browser and download an antimalware program from the Internet, such as Spybot Search & Destroy, Malwarebytes or the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (see Resources). All of these tools are available for free for personal and home use.

Step 3

Open the installation file that you downloaded to install the antimalware software onto your machine. Once the software has been installed, start it through the shortcut on your Desktop.

Step 4

Use the "Update" option on the software to download the latest set of malware definitions. Once the software has been updated, you can use the "Scan" option to scan your computer for any malware.

Step 5

Use the "Remove" or "Delete" option to delete all malware that is found on the computer. Once the software has been removed, restart the computer and allow it to boot up normally.
