How to Replace the Face on an iPhone
The iPhone shares a problem with other cell phones when its screen gets scratched or cracked and needs to be replaced. The iPhone touch digitizer LCD screen is the entire “face” of the iPhone and must be removed from the shell of the cell phone as a single entity. Replacing the iPhone LCD screen can be done by the owner, once a replacement LCD screen has been purchased from an iPhone supply shop. The procedure does not require altering any of the electronic components, although care must be taken when separating the LCD screen from the rest of the iPhone.
Things You'll Need
- Soft cloth
- Paper clip
- Flat-edged jewelry screwdriver
- Phillips jewelry screwdriver
- Digital camera
- Replacement iPhone touch digitizer LCD screen display panel
Put a soft cloth down on a table. Straighten a paper clip. Insert one end of the paper clip into the small hole at the top of the iPhone. Push the end of the paper clip into the hole until the SIM tray pops out a little from the lid. Pull the SIM tray out and put it down on the soft cloth.
Use the Phillips jewelry screwdriver to remove the two screws surrounding the dock connector on the bottom of the iPhone.
Insert the tip of the flat-edged jewelry screwdriver just above one of the two screw holes in the bottom, between the chrome ring and the touch digitizer LCD screen display panel. Exert upward pressure until the touch digitizer LCD screen display panel begins to separate from the iPhone case.
Lift up on the touch digitizer LCD screen display panel, taking care not to disconnect any of the cables connected from it to the iPhone case.
Use the digital camera to take a picture of the cables attached to the main board that extend from the touch digitizer LCD screen display panel.
Use the tweezers to pull out the two ribbon cables from the main board that are coming from the touch digitizer LCD screen display panel. Use the tweezers to remove the ribbon cable that is under one of the two ribbon cables that have just been removed. Lift off and discard the touch digitizer LCD screen display panel.
Use the digital camera as a reference for attaching the three cables to the main board from the replacement touch digitizer LCD screen display panel. Place the replacement touch digitizer LCD screen display panel onto the iPhone casing and push down gently until it clicks into position in the case.
Use the Phillips jewelry screwdriver to screw in the two screws at the bottom of the iPhone. Insert the SIM tray into the slot at the top of the iPhone and push down until it clicks into position. Use the iPhone now that you have replaced its face.
Tips & Warnings
- Wear cotton gloves when handling the replacement LCD screen so that you don't get fingerprints on it.
- Opening up the iPhone to replace the LCD screen will void the Apple warranty.
