How to Reset the Password to a Hotmail Account If You Can't Get Into Your Account

By Kristen Waters

Hotmail is a free online email application provided by Microsoft. It is also called "Windows Live Hotmail." In order to access your Hotmail email, you must know the password you set up for the account. If you have forgotten the password, Microsoft allows you to reset it. You will have to have an alternate email address set up on the account or remember the answer to the secret question that you chose when setting up the account.

Step 1

Open a Web browser.

Step 2

Navigate to the Hotmail.com.

Step 3

Click on the "Forgot your password?" link under the "Password" text box.

Step 4

Click on the "I forgot my password" radio button to select the option.

Step 5

Click on the "Reset your password" link that appears.

Step 6

Type your Hotmail email address in the first text box.

Step 7

Type the letters from the captcha image in the second text box.

Step 8

Click the radio button next to the "Email me a reset link" or "Customer Support" option. Choose the "Email me a reset link" option, if you have set up an alternative email address on your account. Choose the "Customer support" option if you have no alternate email address set up. You will have to know the answer to your secret question to use the "Customer support" option.

Step 9

Check your secondary email account for the link or provide the answer to your secret question.

Step 10

Provide a new password, when prompted.
