How to Restore Factory Settings to a Toshiba Without a CD

By Chad Buleen

While you may have received a recovery CD with your Toshiba computer that allows you to return the computer to factory settings, you do not need to have a CD to be able to do so. Toshiba computers include a HDD Recovery feature that deletes all of the files on your hard drive and restores your computer back to its original factory settings. Restoring the factory settings is a wise thing to do if you want to protect your privacy and are reselling the computer or giving it away.

Step 1

Restart your computer and press the "F8" key when the Toshiba logo appears during the restart.

Step 2

Choose the "Repair Your Computer" entry on the page that appears and press "Enter."

Step 3

Select a language under the "Select a keyboard layout" drop-down menu and click the "Next" button.

Step 4

Type your password into the window that opens. Your user name should already be selected. If it is not, click the drop-down menu next to "User name" and select your name.

Step 5

Click "Toshiba HDD Recovery" at the bottom of the next page that opens. Click "Next" when the next two "HDD Recovery" windows open.

Step 6

Click "Yes" in the window that asks you if you want to recover your machine. The factory restore process immediately begins.

Step 7

Click "Restart" when the "Restart" button appears on the screen. The computer will shut down and complete the restoration to factory settings when it restarts.
