How to Scan to PDF With the HP Officejet 6500

Released in 2010, the HP Officejet 6500 is an wireless all-in-one printing center which allows you to scan, print, fax and photocopy at the press of a button. This printer retails for $229 (as of November 2010). Included with all HP printers is a software package called HP Solution Center that must be installed for the printer to function correctly. To scan files to PDF format, you should also have the newest version of Adobe Reader installed (see Resources).

Scanning Using HP Solution Center

Step 1

Click "Start" and type "HP Solution Center" (without quotes) in the search bar. Click on "HP Solution Center" to open the program. Make sure the HP Officejet 6500 is turned on and ready. If you have more than one HP peripheral, click the printer to select it in "Solution Center."

Step 2

Click on "Scan Document" in "HP Solution Center." Even if you are scanning a photo, select "Document." The photo mode in "Solution Center" doesn't save in PDF, but in digital photo file formats like JPEG, BMP or TIFF.

Step 3

Select "Document" again on the settings page that appears. If you see the heading "What you are scanning," be sure to deselect "Picture." Select the destination for your scan from the "Scan to" drop-down.

Step 4

Click on the "File Type" drop-down menu and select "PDF." (If you don't have the PDF option, see Section 2.) Load the original that you wish to scan onto the scanner glass or into the document feeder tray and click "Continue."

Reinstalling Adobe Reader Software

Step 1

Click "Start" and type "Adobe Reader" (without quotes) into the search bar. If no search results are shown, your system is missing the "Adobe Reader" program, which may conflict with the HP software if installed after the "Solution Center". You'll need to download a free version from Adobe.com (see Resources).

Step 2

Click "Start" and "Control Panel," and then under the "Programs" heading, click "Uninstall a program." Scroll through the list until you see "Adobe Reader" and click "Uninstall." Follow the directions on screen to remove the program. Restart your computer.

Step 3

Visit Adobe.com to download the newest version of "Adobe Reader" (version 9.4, as of November 2010). Reader can be found in the "Download" section on the main page. Install the program when the download completes.

Step 4

Follow the same steps but to uninstall "HP Solution Center." Insert the product CD into the computer and follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall "HP Solution Center." Saving as a PDF should now be an option.
